A bill passed New Jersey’s Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee that would require doctors and surgeons applying for or renewing a license to obtain an international criminal background check. New Jersey’s Board of Medical Examiners will be responsible for conducting a thorough criminal background check with law enforcement authorities of any country where the applicant has lived. The bill also requires that the applicant provides contact information for any employer they have had within the past 10 years. The BME will then be required to contact the entire list to determine if the person has good moral character and is able to perform required duties before issuing the license. The bill was unanimously approved by the committee and will now go to the full Senate of New Jersey for examination.
