A “ban the box” measure has gained bipartisan support within the state government of Wisconsin. With support from WISDOM, a grassroots group working for the fair treatment of non-violent offenders, Senators Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin sponsored the bill. Their goal is to eliminate the question about criminal history on employment applications to help the more than 8,000 criminals that reenter society each year in the state. The cities of Madison and Milwaukee have passed the measure at varying levels but the Wisconsin Manufacturing and commerce lobbying group in Madison is currently opposing the bill.
